3-D Secure is a security protocol for online card payments. It adds a check between you, the shop and the bank, so that a payment goes through only if it is really you making it.
How it works
- You enter your card details on the shop’s website.
- The payment system decides whether an extra check is needed.
- If it is, you are taken to a confirmation page, usually from the bank or the payment provider.
- You confirm the payment.
- The payment goes through.
Ways to confirm
The method depends on the shop, the payment provider and the card. It can be a one-time code sent by text message or email, a push notification in an app, biometrics such as a fingerprint or face scan if your device supports it, or, less often, a permanent password.
When 3DS is requested
- A payment from a new card or a new browser.
- An amount above a set limit.
- A purchase in a country other than the one where the card is registered.
- A payment the shop or provider considers risky.
- A shop that requires 3DS for every payment.
Pros and cons
3DS protects you from fraud and payments made by someone else, and in disputes you carry less responsibility. On the other hand, confirming takes a moment, you need access to your phone or app, and the payment fails if you can’t confirm it.
FAQ
The confirmation code doesn’t arrive. What should I do?
Check that the phone number or email linked to the card is current and reachable, and that your phone has signal or internet. Request the code again after a few seconds. If that doesn’t help, contact support.
Can a payment go through without 3DS?
Sometimes, if the shop and the provider see it as low risk, your device and browser are trusted or the amount is below the limit. A shop can still require 3DS for any payment.
Does a virtual card support 3-D Secure?
Online payments with a Rumto card are confirmed the way the website or payment service offers: a text message code, an email code or a push notification.
