A Rumto virtual card works almost anywhere Visa or Mastercard is accepted, in shops, cafés and hotels, and online. You add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay and pay with your phone, and you use the card details for bookings, taxis and subscriptions. You fund it from your Rumto wallet, which you top up with crypto.
Before the trip
- Get a card in the Rumto app and check its list of countries where it isn’t available. Each card has its own list, and the app shows it before you buy.
- Top up your wallet with crypto and move funds to the card.
- Add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Paying in shops
Pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay at the terminal. A virtual card has no PIN code. If an old or misconfigured terminal asks for a PIN, use another till or terminal.
Choosing the currency at the till
Terminals abroad often offer to charge you in dollars or another currency instead of the local one. Choose the local currency: Visa or Mastercard then convert at their official rate, and the terminal can’t add its own markup. More in dynamic currency conversion.
What the card can’t do
The card is for cashless payments only, so you can’t withdraw cash at an ATM with it. It has no PIN, which means terminals that insist on one won’t take it. It also doesn’t work inside countries with restrictions.
Important: before you buy a card, check in the app that it works in the country you’re going to. Each card has its own list of countries where it can’t be used, and the list may be updated as international rules change. If a payment is declined in a country that isn’t on the list, contact support.
Paying by QR in Asia
In Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia and the Philippines you can also pay by QR code straight from your Rumto balance, without the card. See Thai QR payment for tourists and VietQR for foreigners.
If a payment fails abroad
Even outside the restricted list, a payment can fail: the merchant decides which cards and countries to accept, your account region affects available payment methods, payment providers have their own geographic limits, and a security check can stop an unusual payment. Check the card balance and details, wait a few minutes and try again, or ask the merchant whether they accept payments from your country. Before a large purchase abroad, ask the merchant in advance.
